While there is constant alternation of normal and inverted word order, no dependent clauses are introduced before the fifth exercise. Exercises V. - VIII. Contain many such, but they are so arranged as not to affect the word order of the independent clause. This latter point is emphasized in the succeeding exercises. The editor's experience as a teacher has resulted in a preference for much writing of simple, easy prose rather than drilling on a restricted amount which contains more difficulties; also in the conviction that. The word order is one of the greatest stumbling~ blocks for elementary classes. If these exercises arr: found useful in overcoming this difficulty, the com~ piler will feel repaid for the effort.' The exercises; retell the story of the text, hence a separate vocabulary is unnecessary. The subjunctive has been avoided as much as possible, and, where this was not feasible, the correct form has been given in a footnote.
The exercises containing questions in German are merely suggestive. The teacher can follow the general plan of the exercises for translation, or can make them the basis of a drill on the idioms found in the text.
