La critique biblique a établi, avec une évidence indiscutable, que mi la Bible, dans son ensemble, ui même les différents livres qui la constituent, ne sont des oeuvres systématiquement composées; ce sont des compilations d'écrits primitivement indépendants, nés souvent à des siècles de distance, s'inspirant de préoccupations souvent contradictoires et plus tard remaniés, notamment par les rédacteurs postexiliques du texte canonique où ces versions ont été, dans la mesure possible, conciliées les unes avec les autres.
