Excerpt from The Marvellous Year
It has been the author's aim to find the meaning of each life, to strip it of the unimportant details that may obscure it, and brie¿y to present the reason for honoring the memory of the great dead.
The title-page of this book raises the obvious question as to the identity of the author of the essays that follow. The publisher, to his keen regret, is pledged to withhold the writer's name. It is not because of fear of criticism if his effort is unfavorably received or because of modesty if it meets with praise, but because his life work is cast in other fields than that of biographical interpretation, that he has so decided. While this book has been a pleasure to him he is reluctant to associate his name with any activity but the one which claims him.
