Il y a quelques années à peine, il eût été difficile, sinon impossible, d'écrire un ouvrage de quelque importance sur les Chemins de fer électriques. Ce n'est pas que, déjà, l'on ne se fût rendu compte des avantages remarquables de l'électricité, relativement à la traction des véhicules sur rails. Mais les efforts s'étaient concentrés à peu près exclusivement sur les tramways, qui subissaient, alors, les inconvénients bien connus de la traction animale.
