Il n'est pas sans intérêt de comparer la faune antarctique proprement dite, limitée au 60° de latitude sud, avec la faune arctique, bien qu'elles diffèrent beaucoup l'une de l'autre par la quantité de leurs espèces connues, le nombre des formes antarctiques d'amphipodes n'atteignant qu'un peu plus du quart de celui des formes arctiques.
