La réaction davidienne n'est pas un phénomène subit; elle est le résultat de causes anciennes. Dès 1755 - 1760; avait commencé la campagne contre l'art aimable, galant, clair, décoratif qui régnait en France depuis quarante ans. Déjà Cochin et Diderot condamnaient Nattier et Boucher au nom de la vraisemblance et de la raison. Les contemporains de Rousseau reprochaient à cet art detre l'expression d'une société corrompue et prêchaient le retour à la nature et aux mâles vertus des anciens. Or, à la même époque, l'antiquité semblait renaître de ses ruines à Rome, les fouilles exhumaient des statues et des vases de marbre.
