L'accueil fait, en France et à letranger, a la Premiere Partie de ce Manuel, publiée en 1896, a été très favorable. Je n'avais pas eu tort de croire qu'un ouvrage de ce genre serait utile, puisque deux tirages en ont été rapidement épuisés. D'autre part, mes intentions ont été très bien com prises; les techniciens, dont le suffrage m'a été précieux entre tous, ont apprécié, justement comme je l'aurais pu souhaiter, l'effort fait pour condenser, sous le plus mince volume, une quantité considérable de renseignements substantiels, et pour clarifier, en les raisonnant, les connaissances bibliographiques.
