Fin da quando Duchenne elevò ad entità. Morbosa l'atrofia muscolare progressiva, discrepanti Opinioni sorsero sulla sede e sulla natura di tale malattia; ed un progresso notevole venne certamente a determinarsi colle osservazioni anatomiche ulteriori, le quali fecero rilevare, come l'atrofia muscolare progressiva fosse legata all'atrofia delle grosse cellule nervose delle corna anteriori spinali. La questione però entrò in una fase evolutiva impor tante, quando il Friedreich ed altri attirarono I' attenzione più particolarmente sui muscoli affetti, determinandosi un pe riodo di grande attività, per cui nuove forme cliniche furono se lezionate, mentre in esse veniva a delinearsi un difetto capitale, rappresentato dalla mancanza d' una sufficiente base anatomo patologica.
