Auteur du plus grand succès théâtral du XVII^e siècle français, Thomas Corneille (1625-1709) reste un écrivain assez méconnu. Au cours d'une longue carrière il s'est essayé dans tous les genres dramatiques : comédies espagnoles et françaises, tragédies romanesques et historiques, une tragi-comédie, des livrets d'opéra et des pièces à machines. Membre de l'Académie française, il était aussi journaliste, lexicographe et grammairien. Cet ouvrage est la troisième partie d'un Théâtre complet en neuf volumes qui veut situer « Corneille le cadet » dans son temps, à cheval sur les périodes de Pierre Corneille et de Racine, en faisant ressortir à la fois sa fidélité aux normes traditionnelles et son étonnante souplesse comme homme de théâtre.
