Excerpt from Catalogue of the Library of the India Office, Vol. 2: Part IV, Bengali, Oriya, and Assamese Books
The names of authors and the titles of works are ranseribed exactly as they are spelt in the vernacular, according to a definite system of transliteration which has been uniformly followed in the preparation of the various catalogues of Indian Vernacular books in this Library, based on the system and general principles adopted in the Library of the British Museum. In order to secure uni formity with the spelling of names in the Sanskrit Catalogue, the final inherent a - though often unsounded in the Bengali pro nunciation of a Sanskrit word - has been retained; as, for instance, Somadeva Bhutta, Ramayana, Bhagavatapurana. In Bengali and other vernacular modified forms of Sanskrit words (tadb/mvas) the unsounded inherent a has been omitted; e.g., Tekchand Thakur, Bankimchandra.
