Excerpt from Our Domestic Animals in Health and Disease: First Division Organs of Digestion, Their Functions and Disorders
The laws of health require to be known before ill-health or disease can be understood, and agriculturists require to know more of disease with a view to prevention, than with a view to active medical treatment. It is this circumstance which will induce the author to treat fully of the causes of disease - their method of action - the phenomena they induce - and the methods of checking the latter. In this Treatise the functions of animals are considered in their healthy con dition, with the circumstances capable of disturbing them, and a general history of such disturbances. Thus what has to be said of disease illustrates and demonstrates all that has to be said regarding health.
With this programme clearly before him, the author has aimed at limiting his subject in the manner he deems most desirable for the class of readers for whom this Treatise is intended, viz., the well-educated stockowner no less than the veterinary surgeon.
