This William Forbes of Tolquhon had his picture - painted by J amieson about this time. Itis now in the possession of his descendant, Leith of Whitehaugh, having been given to him by Margaret Montgomery, widow of Thomas Forbes of Watertoun, after his decease in 1771. When painted, he was above 80 years old. He is the same who built the Castle of Tolquhon, the ruins of which still preserve many marks of grandeur. In 1799, the follow ing inscription still remained over the great gateway Al this warke excep the auld Tour was begun be William Forbes, 15 Apl. 1584 and endit be him 20 Octr. 1589.
