Excerpt from Wakefield Worthies: Or Biographical Sketches of Men of Note Connected

TO a few friends, who have aided him with infor mation and suggestions, he here returns his warmest thanks more special acknowledgments will be found in the course Of the work. Nor must he forget to pay this slight tribute to the patience and energy Of his publisher, who has spared no pains that the Wakefield Wort/ties, such as they are, should at least lose nothing by their appearance in Wakefield typography. And so he commits this, his first attempt, to the world, the little world Of his native town. The labour spent on it has been no ungrateful one. It is well for one, in populous, city pent, to feel now and then beneath his feet, even in imagination, the soft, springy turf Of the Wakefield Heath, and exchange the faint atmosphere Of crowded streets for the freshening breezes Of the Yorkshire dales. If, in turn, it con tribute to the promotion Of public spirit among his fellow-townsmen, Of that esprit zle corps Of the right sort, which local history is designed to infuse, and, in short, of christian brotherhood in any form, the bene fit will have been mutual.
