However, though the extant prose renderings of Beowulf, the later as well as the earlier, remain, in nature if not in design, commentary rather than translation, still such is the disputed state of text and interpretation, still such is the implication of technical scholarship with imaginative pleasure, that only such medium will satisfy as verse which satisfies also as an exact record of specific opinion. Can the Niebe lungen verse be adapted to the demands of philology? It seems to me it can.
