There will be given in the following pages a short outline of the current belief in the most important theories and principles of variation, evolution and heredity, with their practical applica tion to methods of breeding farm crops, which it is hoped will give the farmer an idea of the scope and present state of the problems. Should the reader be sufficiently interested to pursue the subject furthers, he should consult the annotated list of supplementary reading given at the end of this paper.
