Un jeune homme d'une mise fort simple, mais élégante, venait de sortir d'un couloir obscur fermé par une porte à claire - voie. C'é tait vers le milieu de la rue Mazarine. Personne alors, que ce jeune homme ne passait dans la rue; aucun bruit de voiture; le silence était profond. Le jeune homme fit quelques pas vers le guichet de l'institut; mais, tout-à-coup, s'arrêtant dans sa marche, il parut hésiter un instant. Il regardait tour à tour le ciel chargé de brume et le pavé tout recouvert d'un vaste tapis de neige sur lequel s'amortissait le bruit des pas.
