Excerpt from Materia Medica of Vegetable and Animal Origin: With Notes on the Properties, Uses, and Constituents of Crude Drugs

The plan of the work is similar to that which has proved so convenient in the case of Pharmacopedia,' the whole of the substances dealt with being treated in alphabetical order, without any attempt at classification. The monographs contain the most recent information available concerning the botanical or zoological, geo graphical, and commercial sources of the crude drugs and their principal commercial varieties, with explanatory notes on (1) the morphological nature of organised sub stances, (2) the mode of formation of such as are nu organised, and (3) the modes of collecting and preparing the drugs for the market. In addition, the various oficial and non-official drugs are described at length, and their physical and chemical characters explained more fully than is usual in the British Pharmacopmia and other works, special attention being given to the differences between genuine drugs of good quality and others which are of inferior quality, or used as adulterants or sub stitutes. The chemistry of drugs has also received special attention in this work, all the important constituents of drugs being mentioned in every case, while fuller con sideration is given to the chief active constituents including alkaloids, glucosides, resins, and volatile and fixed oils - and the proportions in which they are present. The properties and uses of the respective drugs are referred to as fully as seems desirable in a work of this character, designed primarily for the use of practising pharmacists and pharmaceutical students.
