Excerpt from Canterbury Tales, Vol. 1 of 2
Sophia Lee, as the author of The Recess and of the comedy called The Chapter of Accidents, already held a distinguished place in public favour. The richness of invention, and the versatility of talent, which characterised those efforts of her pen, were again displayed in The Young Lady's Tale, or the Two Emilys; and in The Clergyman's Tale, or Pembroke. After contributing these, and the' intro duction inserted in the first volume, she declined taking any future share in the work, and left the additional volumes, whatever their number might prove, to me; in whose mind, as she smilingly oh served, thick-coming fancies allowed no room for further copartnership.
