Excerpt from Commercium Philosophico-Technicum, or the Philosophical Commerce of Arts: Designed as an Attempt to Improve Arts, Trades, and Manufactures
The chemical attraction, or afiinity, Obtains between bodies as being compofed of parts, and as being of a did-e: rent fpecies of matter from one another. It never takes place while the two bodies are at any fenfible dif'tance and when they are brought into the clofeft contaét, there is frequently neceitary fome other power, as fire, to excite their action upon one another. In p'roportion as this action happens, they are no longer two bodies, but one; the affinity confifting in the intimate coalition ofthe parts of one body w - ith-thofe of the other. The properties of this new compound are not in any kind of ratio of thofe of the compounding bodies, nor difcove-r-able by any ma thematical inveftigation: two bodies, each by itfelf very eafily fufible in the fire, as lead and fulphur, (hall form a compound very difficult of fufion; and two which cannot feparately be made to melt at all, as pure clay and chalk, {hall melt with cafe when joined together.
