To exprefs, fays m(dry 'de'n in that Pafi'age, the Pa¿ions, which are feated in the,'héart, by outward Signs, is one great Pref cept.of thefpaihters, and very difficult to pet: form; In Poetry, the very fame Pafiions and Motions of the Mind 'are to be exprefted and in this confi¿s the principal Difiiculty, as well as the Excellency ofthat Art. This (fays Du Pref noy) is the Gift of Jupiter; and, to {peak in the u fame heathen Language, we call it the Gift ofour Apoilo, not to be obtained by Pains or Study, if we are not born to it. For the Motions, which are ¿udied, are never (0 natural as thofe which break out in the height of a real Pa¿ion. Mr. Otway po¿efied this Part as thoroughly as any of the Ancients and Modems. I will nht de vfend everything in hisvenice Preferv'd; but. I mut't bear this Te¿imony to his Memory, that the Pafiions are truly touched in it, though per hap's there is fomewhat to bedefired both in the Grounds of them, and in the Height and Ele gance of exprethon. But Nature is there, which is the greatefi Beauty.
