En 1923, Vivienne de Watteville accompagne son père en Afrique orientale. Ce dernier est tué par un fauve. Cinq ans plus tard, cédant à la fascination de l'Afrique, la jeune femme retourne au Kenya, non plus le fusil à la main, mais avec une petite chienne qui se prend pour une lionne, des appareils photo et une caméra, un gramophone - et une provision de thé. Son but : approcher au plus près les antilopes et les zèbres, les lions, les rhinocéros et les éléphants, et entrer en harmonie spirituelle avec la nature, à l'image de son maître à penser, Henry David Thoreau.
