That there is a widespread feeling prevalent in these days that reason is in some way an tagonistic to revealed truth that the fresh discoveries of modern research, and the better conclusions to which the progress of science has advanced, have cut away the ground on which Christian theology rests - must be known to all who are at all familiar with the currents of modern thought. And there are probably few who do not also know the pain and distress of incertitude that this very assumption causes to most minds, who are unwilling to plunge into the chaos of unbelief which seems the only alter native for those who forsake the sure ground of a divine revelation on which to build their faith, and yet are fearful to rest all their hopes upon a foundation which is so generally assumed to be Visionary and delusive.
