It is not necessary to dwell on the history of our independence. It is astonishing that this history was written, precisely written before that independence was achieved. I allude to what, at the time, was deemed a phrensied oration of Wilkes, in the House of Commons, in 1775, on the motion of Lord North to de clare the province of Massachusetts in a state of rebellion.
