Les Argens n'ont pas tardé à devenir assez maîtres de leur pays d'adoption pour s'en considérer EURomme les enfants, comme les possesseurs légitimes, et pour traiter fort dédaigneusement les langues anaryennes qui survi vaient autour d'eux. Aussi ne s'en occupèrent-ils que fort peu, et donnèrent - ils tous leurs soins à leur idiome national, dont la forme, pour ainsi dire normale, littéraire, était le sanskrit, mais qui, dans l'usage courant, comprenait mille variétés locales, groupées par les grammairiens en six dialectes ou pmkrits principaux, savoir: la mahârâchtn.
