Presently, as they slid into the station, a long line of blue-shirted, top-booted porters, who had been paraded in anticipation of their arrival, suddenly broke up their semi-military alignment, and gaily precipitating themselves on to the train, began noisily offering their services to all and sundry. He watched these bearded, cheerful fellows at work with the curious sense of contentment within him growing. The half Smile which was always wandering round his lips and looking out of his eyes seemed more evident than usual just then. Here was a land where it was still possible to live en prince, far from a maddening democracy.
