I have had to face it in imagination for the last fortnight continually, as you must know - you who have been putting it before me all day long and telling me that you had positive proofs of its being a fact. I have faced it, thought of it, examined myself on, it, and I tell you deliberately that if it were true, I should have no faith in anything - no hope, no charity. In losing him I should lose all. You will say perhaps that I must be mad to talk so. I am nearly so.
