Excerpt from The Hazlitts: An Account of Their Origin and Descent

I therefore propose to introduce explanatory paragraphs where they are indispensable in order to render the sense clear.

The habit on the part of Hazlitt of repeating in different and even in casual places the same senti ment or anecdote more or less varied involved occasional collation and editorship. It was my original plan and wish to have divided the work into two sections, Autobiography and Analecta, inas much as Hazlitt went so far to leave his own story behind him, subject to arrangement or consolidation.

But I found such a large admixture of the two features or elements in immediate contact, each essential to the complete grasp of the facts, that I was obliged to decide in favour of the more usual treatment of the text, although, as will be manifest, the autobiographical form necessarily predominates; it is carefully distinguished by enclosure within in verted commas.
