La posizione geografica della città di Venezia, presa come luo go d' osservazione la specola dell' I. R. Collegio della Marina, e 115° 26' di latitudine, e 1' di longitudine.
I confini della laguna dalla parte del mare sono quella catena di lunghe isole, ovvero quella interrotta lingua di terra formata da dune, in parte naturali, in parte artificiali, che costituiscono il lito rale menzionato più sopra. Di questi lidi, come pure de' porti for mati dai loro intervalli, offriremo più distinte nozioni in appresso.
