Le formole del Sarrau, studiate per le polveri nere, dànno, applicate a queste ultime, risultati abbastanza soddisfacenti, mentre lo stesso non accade sempre quando esse si applicano alle moderne polveri infumi, sebbene per queste sia verifi cata con maggiore esattezza l'ipotesi fondamentale della combustione per strati paralleli. Come tutte le formole em piriche, esse conducono a risultati poco esatti quando si ap plicano in condizioni notevolmente diverse da quelle per le quali vennero determinate.
