Die erste Kunde davon, dass auf dem südamerikanisehen Kontinente Flüsse von "eigentümlich schwarzer Färbung sich finden, brachte uns ein Spanier, Gonzalo Pizarro's Send ling, Orellana. Im Jahre 1540 fuhr derselbe als der erste Europäer den Amazonas hinab, kam bis an die Mündung des Rio Negro und beobachtete mit Staunen die fast schwarze Farbe dieses Flusses, die auch nach der Mündung in den Amazonenstrom noch stundenweit bemerkbar war!)
