Während (2) die Geschwindigkeit der Gröfse nach bestimmt, definiert man die Richtung derselben als die Richtung der Tangente in dem Punkte der Bahn, in welchem der bewegliche Punkt sich befindet. Die Ge schwindigkeit in jedem Punkte läfst sich deshalb durch eine Strecke darstellen, welche auf der Tangente ab getragen ist, sobald man eine beliebige Strecke als Ein heit der Geschwindigkeit gewählt hat, unter Einheit der Geschwindigkeit diejenige Geschwindigkeit verstanden.
