Um ir g e n d w el 0 h 9 Zahlen zu bezeichnen, ge braucht man in der Arithmetik nicht allein die ge wöhnlichen Zahlzeichen, wie 6, 39, 1896, sondern auch Buchstaben, wie a, b, A, x, und zwar meist die Buch staben des kleinen lateinischen Alphabets. D a b ei kann jeder Buchstabe jede beliebige Zahl vertreten, nur dass in einem An sdruck, in einer Gleichung, in einer Ungleichung oder überhaupt im Laufe einer Rechnung ein und derselbe Buchstabe, wenn er mehrmals auf tritt, im m er nur dieselbe Zahl vertreten darf.
