A bella ed utile pianta, che i Greci dissero xvordpm'a'os, da' tempi assai remoti venne in giusta rinomanza. Propria secondo l'osservazione di Teofrasto de' fervidi climi, nasceva essa in -maggioi' copia precisamente nelle isole di Creta e di Rodi, e nella Licia. Il cipresso cretese pare che abbia massimamente ottenuto celebrità e per la sua eccellenza ne' lavori e perla copia, e la spon taneità con cui esso in Creta si moltiplicava. Teofrasto infatti insegna che il cipresso negli altri luoghi si semi nava, ma-che in Creta germinava anche 'dal tronco, ed in Tan/za città dell'isola medesima denominavasi xoupz.
