The inhabitants of this metropolis are not likely to forget that in 1860, upon the occasion of the passing of the Metropolis Gas Act, Mr. Hughes, associated with Mr. James Beal, a gentleman whose assiduous devotion to public inte rests is so well known and appreciated, were the pioneers of a movement which secured the subsequent development for the public benefit of all the late improvements introduced in the supply of gas.
