Excerpt from Deutsche Bildungszustände in Der Zweiten Hälfte Des Achtzehnten Jahrhunderts
In preparing the notes a certain knowledge of German literature on the part of the student has been assumed. Much had to be left to the explanation of the instructor, as the space for the notes was limited. Among the books referred to in the notes, preference was given to works in English, as they are more accessible to the students. The bibliography at the end gives a few important German sources, but the list could easily be enlarged. The editor wishes to express his indebtedness to Professor A. H. Thorndike of Northwestern University for many kind suggestions.
