Excerpt from The Quiet People of the Land: A Story of the North Carolina Moravians in Revolutionary Times

Foreword [xi]many of the unique practices that were to influence so strongly their life in North Carolina.

It was a way of life grounded on a simple heart religion in which the making of shoes, the grinding of corn, and the playing of a musical instrument served the cause of the Lord no less directly than ministering to the heathen. The Unity served as protector and director of both the material and spiritual affairs of its members, and if a Brother could not live comfortably under that thick canopy, he was free to leave; indeed, he was invited to do so.
