Questi stessi caratteri neppure guardati furono con quel lo interesse, che le fondamenta della scienza, allora non conosciuta richiedevano onde anche i meglio conservati esemplari, con pochissima precisione vennero figurati. Per la medesima sopi'a additata causa, consumata l'esterior sopraffaccia delle conchiglie le tinte le macchie, e le fascie non poco cambiate ne furono: e quindi le tante svariate immagini di una medesima specie. Questa scien za, rimasta perciò senza utile applicazione, poco potea in teressare la classe de' dotti che a 'quelli successero.
