The rival and in some respects the superior of Burma he has enjoyed an unequaled popularity on the German stage. His dialogue is always bubbling over with wit, and his drastic humor carries a'way auditor and reader, even though a careful critic finds but little beneath the surface. The difiiculties into which he gets his characters must not be taken too seriously. While the characters are often drawn with great distinctness, still they are not struggling with any burning social problem, and are brought before us only to amuse us by pointing out how ridiculous our foibles seem to others. The sparkling dialogue in itself is enough to justify the existence of such dramas of situation.
