Hero of the Chilian war of independence. There seems to be no doubt that his conviction was unjust. He was afterwards pardoned and restored to his rank in the Navy. His biographer in the Dictionary of National Biography complains that the conviction was not an nulled, but omits to suggest by what process short of an Act of Parliament this could have been done.
