Excerpt from The Charms of Elocution Set Forth: In a Choice Selection of Readings and Recitations, Illustrative of the Human Affections and Sympathies; With an Introductory Essay on the Pleasures and Advantages of Elocution

The present collection exhibits an earnest attempt to avoid all these defects such subjects only are inserted as have a tendency to draw forth and strengthen the higher faculties of our nature - to promote the increase and dissemination of all the Christian virtues - and to hasten the reign of Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Man.

With this view the pieces in the present volume have been selected; and we feel warranted in asserting that every poem is worthy of being committed to memory. And we may add that the youth who will make himself familiar with the whole of them, will possess a more extensive and choice vocabulary, and will have his mind stored with more beautiful ideas and noble sentiments.
