Excerpt from Der Bibliothekar: Schwank in Vier Akten
In Germany the play has not been edited for schools. In England and America, however, it has enjoyed special favor. The present edition aims to make the notes explain points that have actually given trouble in the classroom. German questions based on the text and English exer cises for translation into German have been added. The vocabulary contains definitions of the words and idioms occurring in the text, in the German questions based on the text, and in the footnotes to the English exercises.
I am greatly indebted to my brother, Paul R. Lieder, for help in reading the proof; to Dr. August Prehn, of the Columbia Grammar School (new York City), for a careful revision of the German questions; and to Mr. S. T. Byington, of the Athenaeum Press, for incisive criticism, invaluable suggestions, and generous aid.
