Excerpt from Journal of the Hon. John Erskine of Carnock, 1683-1687
This transaction took place in the palace of Greenwich, on 3lst May 1608; and on the same day royal signatures were granted in terms of the resignation, and delivered by the King to the Earl of Mar, to be kept and used by him to the behoof of his said two sons.'
