The Roman youth, who eagerly aspired to her alli ance. Octavia, humble and unambitious, shunned the public homage; dreading to be made a sacrifice to political motives, she sighed after that purer hap piness, which, seated in the mind, gratifies the heart and its affections. It was proposed, during the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, that Octavia should be given to the latter as a pledge of union, and that a period might be put to the dissensions which-deso lated Rome: but other circumstances arising, inter rupted this negociation, and, for the present, deli vered the princess from a destiny which, however adverse to her feelings, she had determined not to oppose. That the happiness of individuals should yield to the public welfare, was a principle which had been early impressed upon her mind.
