On the other hand, I acknowledge my gratefulness for what there is to show. Such unity as the book has was not planned until the very latest stages of production indeed, it was not so much planned as it was actually determined by the momentum and direction of what I had already done in past years. In other words, the most recent essays Laforgue, Conrad, and T. S. Eliot and Fusion and Experience - are further records of my response to Eliot's poetry and of my arguments with his criticism.
