Pour explorer la cavité, on procède avec méthode, tournant d'abord l'instrument à droite, puis à gauche, puis en bas au niveau dela paroi inférieure de la vessie. On rencontre ainsi un calcul, un corps étranger. On reconnaît la profondeur du bas - fond vésical à la facilité avec laquelle l'instrument peut tourner autour du col.
Indépendamment des corps étrangers que l'explorateur métallique rencontre, cet instrument donne encore des notions sur l'état des parois de la vessie, sur sa sensibilité, sur sa contractilité.
