Excerpt from Blood Stains in Criminal Trials

When the stains are upon cloth, a piece is cut out, con taining the stain, or part of it, to be examined, and sus pended by a thread in a test-tube; and if the stain is recent, the red colouring matter will soon be imparted to the water, but if it is Old, a longer time is required for its solution. If porous substances, such as wood, stones, mortar, and bricks, with blood stains upon them, are put into water, the blood is dissolved and carried into the depths of the material without giving the colour to water.
