One tenth of the entire trade of the British Empire passes through the seaports of India; and this sea borne trade is more than one-third of the trade of the Empire outside the United Kingdom. It is greater than that of Australia and Canada com bined, and Within the Empire Indian sea-b orne trade is second only to that of the United Kingdom. India has become the largest producer of food and raw material in the Empire, and the principal granary of Great Britain, the imports into the United Kingdom of wheat, meal, and ¿our from India exceeding those of Canada, and being double those of Australia. For all these reasons the question of the present dangerous situation in India is of momentous interest to everyone in this country.
