Excerpt from American Phonetic Journal, Vol. 3: January, 1856

The beautiful system of writing known as Phonography, is based on a strictly Phonetic analysis of our language, and combines with grater legibility greater brevity than any system of shorthand previously invented. Such was the favor with which this system was received in this country as well as in England. That it originated in the minds of many who had not before directed their thoughts to the desirability of a rational spelling, the idea that the application of the Phonetic principle to printing was as desirable, and might be equally successful as had been it: application to writing.
