These kinds Of renewal must Ola however, be confounded with Charters of Confirmation, in which a King often increased the benefits or privileges granted by his predecessors, giving at the same time the contents of their diplomas either in substance or in terms. Both deeds derive all their effect from the authority from which they emanate: if they contain errors, that authority covers them by ratifying the rights which those errors might weaken; but if the original deeds be not authentic, no subsequent authority can make them so, although it may grant property or privileges founded on forged charters.
