Stylistics is a critical approach which uses the methods and findings of linguistic patterns. It explores how readers interact with the language of literary texts in order to explain how the readers understand and are affected by texts when they read them. This approach is an instrument on how an author uses language which is depicted in his/her writings. Every fiction writer has a unique style. The writer's style is based on many choices about diction, sentence structure, detail, dialogue, literary devices, and rhythm. The writer's style comes from the diction or word choice he/she uses. Does the writer use simple language or complex language? Is the language concrete or abstract? The writer's style comes from the types of sentence structure he/she uses. Does the writer use short or long sentences? Simple or complex sentences? The present book is written with the same aim in mind. This book has applied techniques of modern linguistics to the study of literature.
